Downloading and Upgrading Keyboard Maestro

Keyboard Maestro, a powerful automation tool for your Mac, allows you to streamline your workflow and increase productivity. If you're looking to upgrade or download older versions of the software, here's what you need to know.

Downloading Older Versions

You can download old versions of Keyboard Maestro from our file archive. This is useful if you're upgrading directly from a much older version, in which case it's recommended to upgrade to the last version of each major release first. For example, if you're currently using version 2.1.3, consider upgrading to 3.5, then 4.3.2, and finally the current version.

Upgrading Keyboard Maestro

To upgrade Keyboard Maestro manually, quit the engine by choosing Quit Engine from the File menu and replace the Keyboard Maestro application in your Applications folder with the new one. Alternatively, you can use the automatic upgrade mechanism by clicking the Install Update button when prompted.

Saving Your Old Macros

When upgrading to a newer version of Keyboard Maestro, your old macros will be saved in the ~/Library/Preferences/Keyboard Maestro/Keyboard Maestro Macros Saved Version 5.plist file, just in case you decide not to upgrade to version 6. Additionally, Keyboard Maestro will automatically import your previous version macros, clipboards, and preferences.

Tips for a Smooth Upgrade

To ensure that all of Keyboard Maestro's facilities are available to you as soon as you login or startup your Mac, consider turning on the 'Launch Engine at Login' preference in the General preference pane. This will also allow you to continue using your macros even after quitting Keyboard Maestro, as long as the engine is still running.
